The story of Maria Callas is very much the story of the ugly - and fat - duckling that becomes a swan. It fascinated the whole world, not just the opera world, and most of it was actually true: THE POOR IMMIGRANT girl with DIVINE TALENT, hard work and a mother who could go over the day's fresh corpse, came down to the position of today's greatest opera star, then met the world's richest man, gave him all her heart - which was large and very red - and lost him to another. The bird had stopped singing, the unfortunate birds do not sing, but the song lives on: today we hear Callas' peerless, heart-stopping, granite soprano often than ever, the movie "Philadelphia" is the latest example. The myth fades as newspaper clips, but the voice is alive. Century's voice is not silenced. She was even greater as a singer than as a fairy tale. But it was not a bad story.
